Rievaulx Abbey, Helmsley

United Kingdom
OS Grid: SE5762284999 streetmap
LAT/LONG: 54.2574,-1.1170

In a beautifully secluded and wooded valley, stand the ruins of the Cistercian monastery of Rievaulx Abbey. It was founded in 1132 and because of the difficulties presented by the terrain, the Abbey was built in a somewhat unorthodox manner: instead of lying from east to west, its central isle was laid in a north to south position. The site was once occupied by a community of 140 monks and 600 lay people.
