Church of All Saints, Chalgrave

Chalgrave Road
United Kingdom
OS Grid: TL0086027430 streetmap
LAT/LONG: 51.9362,-0.5343

All Saints is notable primarily for its excellent medieval wall paintings. The oldest, which are at the west end of the aisles, date to the late thirteenth century. They are thought to represent the twelve apostles, each apostle is portrayed life size with a covering canopy. These figures are overshadowed by a profusion of later heraldic figures, some of which may be in honour of the Loryng family (local lords in the late fourteenth centur). The church contains a fourteenth century memorial to Sir Nigel Loryng (d. 1386) who was one of the founding members of the Order of the Garter and hero of the Battle of Sluys.
